Year 2012 is the 12th year of the 3rd millennium and the 3rd of the 2010s decade. The year 2012 is a leap year with 366 days, as 2012 is a multiple of 4, while not
a multiple of 100. It has been designated the Alan Turing Year, after the famous mathematician and computer pioneer Alan Turing.
The Mayan calendar, called the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, ends on December 21st 2012. This has led to many speculations that this will be the end of the world, and both movies and books have been made on this topic. The History Channel and the Discovery Channel has aired several TV series on this topic as well, such
as "2012 Apocalypse", "Nostradamus 2012", "2012", "End of Days", "Last Days on Earth" and "Seven Signs of the Apocalypse".
There are several theories on what will happen in 2012, everything from giant volcanoes, alien invasions and geomagnetic reversal. There are also lots of movies and various hoaxes regrading 2012 on the internet, particularly on YouTube. Most scientists however believe 2012 will just be a normal year like any other. Doomsday theories and speculations have always been popular, and once 2012 passes we will probably hear of new doomsday scenarios set to other dates.
